Have you noticed when people tell you that if you are not happy with the current politics, then you can go back to where you come from? Have you noticed when they ask you to love it or leave it? Have you noticed when you complain about your working conditions and they tell you that if you’re not happy you can get another job?
The reason they say that is because they don’t want to improve things and they don’t want people to complain about their system which seems to favour them and not you. Whether they want to get rid of you or not, they can justify your situation either as good or bad.
Either you shouldn’t complain because other people could take your place and you should feel happy enough for what you’ve got or you shouldn’t complain because you shouldn’t do what you do in the first place and we warned you enough before. In all cases, you shouldn’t complain. You must shut up.
This is a good illustration of what happens to sex workers and probably to most minorities. When you are demanding your rights, people tell you that you should get a “proper” job because sex work is said inherently violent, exploitative and degrading, or they tell you that you should get a “proper” job because you are lazy and you are doing nothing apart from getting laid. They can be macho or they can be feminist, but you are always wrong.
Your own choices are denied. You haven’t chosen or you have made the bad choice. You are a victim or you are guilty. You can be rehabilitated or you will be punished.
This is how the system works to make you think that there is no alternative, and that there is no need to fight. Those who complain will be targeted. They are not targeted just to be stopped, but much more to stop you. As long as you are doing what you are told, that you don’t complain, they won’t target you.
But you will never be free.
Being a target is not easy. Freedom is not easy. You may not win and you may lose, but at least you would have tried.
It is time to come out now and to join the crazy ones who are the targets because they started the fight. I can only promise you that you will no longer feel on your own and that we will be one day a majority.
